Burke Lake Park looks different this October. Both of its playgrounds are scheduled for renovation this fall, and at least one is closed this month. Two of the county's own pages for the park's seasonal attractions still give reopening dates in 2022 and 2023. And nearly every Halloween-season event is sold by ticket, by date and by time slot. For anyone in Burke planning a fall afternoon at the lake, the dependable schedule is the Park Authority's reservation calendar. Getting the season right comes down to knowing what that calendar lists and what it leaves out.
Two Playgrounds on One Construction Calendar
In an August 20, 2026 release, the Fairfax County Park Authority listed seven playgrounds it would renovate this fall. Two of them are at Burke Lake Park. The Ice Cream Parlor playground is scheduled to start in September 2026 and finish around February 2027. The Shelter A playground also starts in September 2026, with completion expected in December 2026. The county says each playground stays closed for the full length of its project and asks visitors to stay out of the construction areas.
FFXnow covered the same projects on September 8 with a slightly different timeline. It reported that one Burke Lake playground would start in September and the other in November. The county also notes that schedules can shift with weather and site conditions. Under either timeline, at least one of the park's two play areas is closed in October, and the county expects the one by the Ice Cream Parlor to stay closed into the new year. The Park Authority runs construction and closure alerts on its park alerts page, which is the simplest way to see when the fencing comes down.
With the free, walk-up part of a family visit cut back this fall, more of the afternoon depends on the park's ticketed attractions. That raises the question of where to find their current schedule.
The County Page That Has Current Times
The Burke Lake rides page on the county website still says the rides are closed for the season and will reopen in April 2023. The Ice Cream Parlor page says it is closed until April 2022. Both pages are just out of date. Neither one tells you anything about this season.
The Park Authority's reservation system has the current schedule. It lists departures for the Burke Lake Park Railroad, a 1/3-scale replica of a C. P. Huntington train. The ride covers 1.75 miles through the woods and along the lakeshore at up to 12 miles an hour. Tickets are sold per seat, and every rider needs one. A seat on the November 1 run costs $6 per rider.
The sessions listed run on Saturdays and Sundays. Each listed day has eight departures, every half hour from 11:15 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Most show 32 seats available. The listed dates are October 10 and 11, October 17 and 18, and October 31 and November 1. The results page marks itself as the first of two pages, so a November 1 session doesn't confirm that November 1 is the last day of the season. Before promising anyone a train ride later in November, check the reservation calendar again.
The reservation listing also shows a gap. No regular train departures appear for the weekend of October 24 and 25. That weekend belongs to a different event.
October, Weekend by Weekend
This weekend, October 4. Goblin Golf brings Halloween to the mini-golf course from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with treats included and costumed ghosts and goblins on the course all day. The county suggests buying tickets ahead because they can sell out. Today's Foraging for Wild Edibles program is also on the roster.
October 10 and 11. Goblin Golf runs both days. It's also the first weekend of regular train departures in the current listing. On Sunday afternoon from 1 to 2 p.m., Nature Charms has a naturalist teaching participants to set small natural specimens in resin pendants. It's open to ages 9 through adult, and all materials are provided.
October 16 through 18. This is the busiest stretch of the month. It opens on Friday with Campfire Fridays from 6:30 to 8 p.m., which includes nature walks, animal presentations and s'mores. It's for ages 5 through adult, and children must come with a registered adult. Saturday has Goblin Golf, then Sketching along the Lakeside from 4:30 to 6 p.m., with a session on sketching bugs. After that, Bats - Friendly Flyers runs from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. and includes watching and listening for bats nearby. Goblin Golf and the regular train departures continue on Sunday. On Monday, October 19, bunker work starts at Burke Lake Golf Center and runs through November 16. Work zones move one hole at a time, the course stays open, and greens fees are discounted 10 percent while the work is underway.
October 24 and 25. Ghost Town takes over both days from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. It's a family Halloween event with themed activity areas, crafts, mini golf, a carousel ride and a train ride, and costumes are encouraged. Online tickets are $20. The reservation system lists it for ages 2 to 99, with several hundred spots per day. No regular train departures are listed for this weekend, so the train ride comes bundled with the Ghost Town ticket.
October 31 and November 1. Halloween morning has Gourd-geous Discoveries from 10 to 11 a.m., a messy session of pumpkin crafts and experiments for ages 4 through adult. Regular train departures return both days. On Sunday, Hike with a Naturalist runs from 10 to 11 a.m. and teaches participants to log what they find with the iNaturalist app. A second Nature Charms session follows at 1 p.m.
The listed events taper off after that. A Bird Walk With a Naturalist is scheduled for Friday, November 6, from 5 to 6 p.m. Beginners are welcome, and binoculars are available to borrow.
What Lasts Past the Lake's Season
Once the dated park events end, the Burke Farmers Market keeps going. It's open Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon through November 21, in the VRE parking lot at 5671 Roberts Parkway. That's three Saturdays after the last train date currently listed. The market's morning hours also fit easily before an 11:15 a.m. train departure on the October weekends.
Closer to home, two places opened in Burke this year. On March 28, South Block held its grand opening at the Burke Centre Shopping Center, 5765D Burke Centre Parkway, and handed out free açaí bowls to mark it. Moo Thru announced it was open on June 1 and now serves ice cream at Burke Town Center, 6025H Burke Centre Parkway. The county's Ice Cream Parlor page doesn't list 2026 hours, so a Burke Centre Parkway stop is the ice cream option with confirmed fall details.
Burke Centre Conservancy has a date of its own in the middle of the month. Its Annual DiBartolo Day, held in memory of community volunteers Sam and Shirley DiBartolo, is on October 17. That's the same Saturday as Goblin Golf, the lakeside sketching session and the evening bat program.
For families building a weekend around the lake this month, it helps to keep a few things in mind:
- Both playgrounds are on construction timelines, and the Ice Cream Parlor playground is expected to stay closed into February 2027.
- Train seats are $6 each, sold by departure time, and listed only on weekends.
- Ghost Town's $20 ticket covers the train and carousel on October 24 and 25.
- Golf Center bunker work runs October 19 through November 16, and greens fees are discounted 10 percent during that time.
- The Burke Farmers Market runs through November 21.
