Clifton's Holiday Season Lands on One December Saturday

For past tree lightings at Ayre Square, the Town of Clifton ran power to the tree with an extension cord laid across the ground. The square's electrical service line had failed. In its October 2026 report to Town Council, the Events & Arts Committee called the cord fix "a safety/tripping hazard" and asked for a new line run through conduit so the failure doesn't happen again. The committee put the repair at under $500. As of October 3, it was still waiting on a formal quote.

It's a small line item, but it shows how much is riding on one square and one day. The same October 2026 Council packet says the annual Holiday Tree Lighting will be held on the first Saturday of December, which is December 5 this year. Most of the town's holiday events fall on that same date.

Why December 5 Holds Nearly Everything

The tree lighting is only one of the events planned for that Saturday. The Clifton Horse Society lists its Clifton Christmas Parade for Saturday, December 5, 2026, with an event window of 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and an invitation to "celebrate with the Town of Clifton." The Town's December ArtSmart session, an M.C. Escher program planned with The Art Guild and The Purple Hayes Gallery, runs from 10 a.m. to noon the same morning.

The committee is also looking at adding a fourth event. Its report says it is exploring whether to bring back the Holiday Art Fair & Market, in partnership with The Art Guild, at Nickum Hall. The report says:

"Ideally this would take place on the first Saturday of December to align with other holiday activities in town … however the December Art Smart event is in the space until 12PM, so this would require some extra planning/coordination."

The other holiday activities the report has in mind are the Horse Society parade and the tree lighting. The Town is deliberately building one holiday Saturday, and its planning problem is fitting everything into a single day and a handful of venues. The market is a possibility the committee is weighing. If it comes together, it would start at Nickum Hall after ArtSmart ends at noon.

For Clifton households, the season effectively comes down to a single date on the calendar. The Town's Events Committee also supports an annual Holiday Homes Tour, with its own committee lead. The Events Committee page on the Town site is the place to follow that event as December gets closer.

Saturday, December 5, Hour by Hour

Here is the sequence the Town and the Horse Society have set out so far:

Time Event Where Organized by
10 a.m. to noon December ArtSmart: M.C. Escher Town event space, with Nickum Hall named in the committee's planning Town Events & Arts Committee with The Art Guild and The Purple Hayes Gallery
10 a.m. to 2 p.m. window Clifton Christmas Parade Town of Clifton Clifton Horse Society
Afternoon, if approved Holiday Art Fair & Market Nickum Hall Town with The Art Guild
Time to be set by the Town Holiday Tree Lighting with DJ, fire pits and hot cocoa Ayre Square Town Events & Arts Committee

The parade's 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. hours are the window the Horse Society has posted for the event. They aren't a step-off time. The parade page has an RSVP button and says more details are to come.

Kevin Hutto is leading the tree lighting again this year. The committee says he is coordinating with the Town's tree lighting contractor and a DJ and arranging the fire pits and hot cocoa. The committee's plan also includes a newsletter write-up "advising the community about the event and when/what to expect."

On the morning side, the ArtSmart session ends at noon, and the parade window runs until 2 p.m. Anyone planning to do both can stay in town through the middle of the day.

The Gap Between the Parade and the Lights

A day that starts at 10 a.m. and ends at the tree lighting leaves hours to fill on Main Street, and two restaurants a few doors apart are set up for that stretch.

Trummer's at 7134 Main Street now serves weekend brunch, so a Saturday table after the parade is possible. The restaurant also serves lunch and dinner Tuesday through Friday, with happy hour from 3 to 6:30 p.m. on those weekdays. That makes it a good choice for an out-of-town guest arriving midweek before December 5, too.

Down the street at 7145 Main Street, Trattoria Villagio runs a winter Piazza with fire pits, hot chocolate, s'mores kits and classic movies. The tree lighting at Ayre Square will also have fire pits and hot cocoa, so a fire on Main Street and a fire at the square can bookend the same day.

The two restaurants cover different parts of the day. Trummer's brunch suits the late morning after the parade, and Villagio's Piazza suits the hours before the tree lighting.

November Sets Up December

Most of the holiday work in Clifton happens in the weeks before December 5. Four dates this month connect to that Saturday:

  1. Saturday, November 7, 10 a.m. to noon. The November ArtSmart session covers Paul Cézanne and Morisot. It is the first of the two fall programs the Town planned with The Art Guild and The Purple Hayes Gallery, and it comes before the December Escher session. The committee planned a newsletter feature with descriptions and signup links for both sessions.
  2. Friday, November 20, 6:30 to 9 p.m. The Clifton Horse Society hosts Let's Get Crafty!, an evening of making holiday ornaments for the parade, plus horse treats to take home. The event is at a member's home in Clifton. RSVP through the Horse Society page to get the details.
  3. Friday, November 20, 5 p.m. The same day, Trattoria Villagio's order cutoff for its Thanksgiving Feast takeout closes. The feast serves four to six people, and you pick it up at the restaurant. If you're hosting Thanksgiving, place the order before heading to the ornament evening.
  4. Thanksgiving week. The Clifton Lions Club says its annual Christmas tree sale sets up at Thanksgiving at St. Peter's in the Woods Episcopal Church in Fairfax Station. The lot is open weekday evenings and weekends, and sales benefit the club's charitable work. Check the Lions project page for this year's hours before you drive over.

One idea links these four dates. The ornaments made on November 20 go on the parade on December 5. The second ArtSmart session follows the first by four weeks. A tree bought from the Lions lot over Thanksgiving weekend will be in the living room by the day Ayre Square lights up.

Keeping Up as December 5 Gets Closer

The Town's Events & Arts Committee plans newsletter features on the tree lighting and both ArtSmart sessions, with signup links for ArtSmart and a write-up on what to expect at the lighting. The Clifton Horse Society's parade page carries the RSVP button for December 5.

The Ayre Square power line is worth watching, too. Once the new line goes through conduit, the trees at the square won't need an extension cord across the ground. The Town's committee has said the repair should cost less than $500.
